PPS Number Essential
- What it is: Your tax number to work and pay social contributions.
- Golden Rule: You can only apply in person after arriving in Ireland.
- Proof of Address: The biggest hurdle. Use a utility bill or a letter from your employer. Book your appointment at MyWelfare.ie.
Revenue & Tax Critical
- Emergency Tax: Avoid being taxed at 40%. Register your first job on the Revenue portal as soon as you start.
- MyAccount: Create your online account as soon as you have your PPSN to manage your tax credits and avoid unnecessary deductions.
Accommodation Challenge
- Sites: Daft.ie is the go-to. Rent.ie is secondary.
- Applicant Kit: Have a PDF ready with your passport, references and employment letter. Speed is everything.
- Scam Alert: Never pay without viewing the property and testing the key. If the landlord is "abroad", it's a scam.
Transport
- Leap Card: The rechargeable green card that saves you 30% on buses, Luas and DART. Essential from day one.
- Apps: Use "TFI Live" for real-time schedules. Google Maps is unreliable in Dublin.
- Cash: Buses only accept exact change and give no change back.
Communications
- Irish Number: Essential for recruiters to reach you. Buy a prepaid SIM at any supermarket when you arrive.
- Budget Networks: GoMo, 48.ie or Tesco Mobile offer unlimited data for around €15/month.
